And now, a quick jaunt to Jack of Fables, Vol. 2: Jack of Hearts. More or less in publishing order, but not directly related. Mostly it’s a way to get another few on the world.

And oh what a weird view it is. Jack is a powerful individual and he knows it, but he’s also aboslutely terrible at making any good on that, always jumping from one hairbrained scheme to another. In Jack of Fables, Vol. 1: The (Nearly) Great Escape, he was captured by a power that I’m still curious to see more about, now he’s on the run. But half of the story is about that time that he was also Jack Frost (and a royal ass about it then too).

And so it ends. Fullmetal Alchemist, Vol. 26 was absolutely bonkers, so to say that the final battle actually takes a step back and makes the ending all the more … human, that’s saying something.

But you know what? I think they really pulled off the landing. No idea how or really what in the world was going on there, but it all comes together.

I find Greed’s storyline absolutely fascinating. Of all the Homunculi, who would have expected that one to be the most likely to change. Perhaps it says something about humanity?

In any case, it’s a crazy story that just keeps getting bigger and crazier. GIANT BATTLES! SOUND EFFECTS! CRAZY THINGS HAPPENING!

Fables, Vol. 10: The Good Prince . The story of Ambrose (Flycatcher).

In a nut shell: he finds the ghost of Lancelot (yes, that Lancelot), Excaliber (yes, that Excaliber), saves a bunch of damned Fable souls, and makes a kingdom where anyone who wants to sit out the coming war can be safe . If you’d have said that was his coming storyline when we first met him, I’d have thought you mad.

Fables, Vol. 9: Sons of Empire. The calm before the storm. It’s a number of somewhat lighter tales (relatively speaking!) showing how both sides are preparing to strike back.

We get a bit more detail on Frau Totenkinder–who turns out to be even more than we thought–and Ambrose/Flycatcher, who seems to have quite the backstory. And of course, the Wolf clan. They’re always a lot of fun.

One thing leads to another and a telegraph between the boys’ rooms leads to the mystery of a missing coin collection. Along the way, they learn more about the mystery of the house, find a fun old local store, and of course eventually solve the mystery.
