Aladdin. One of the beloved Disney classics of the 90s and easily in my top 3 of that era. It’s just such a fun movie. A rags to riches story, a magical genie, wishes, lies, a big showdown, and great musical numbers all along.
Characterwise, Aladdin is a lot of fun. He’s got his ‘heart of gold’ but that doesn’t mean he’s not without his flaws–or the movie would just be boring. Jafar is a delightfully menacing villain. He’s not evil for the sake of being evil, he’s evil for the sake of power, which makes it all the better. And Iago makes a hilarious foil to him.
Jasmine… is mostly just there. She is trying to grow beyond her role as a princess, but really takes second fiddle to Aladdin That, they could have done better.
But oh, you know the standout of the show: Robin Williams as the Genie. Man that was an absolutely delightfully unhinged casting. It’s amazing. Pop culture. Subtle (and not so subtle) jabs at just about everything. All wrapped in a perfect amount of heart. Oh, the genie makes this movie–and I know I’m not alone in saying that.
Plotwise, it goes pretty much exactly as you’d expect. It’s not deep. It doesn’t have to be.
Music wise, oh, I do like this soundtrack. Really, it’s once again the Genie songs that sell it. Friend Like Me and Prince Ali are great. A Whole New World is a solid ballad though and Arabian Nights is a fun introduction before or after the relatively recent changes.
Overall, it’s great to see a movie that, in my opinion, held up from my childhood. I should probably give the live action remake a try–but without Robin Williams? You ain’t never gonna have a friend like him.
