Another day, another hero.
This time around, we open with Jason. Another obvious (to the reader) demigod, hidden in plain sight. Battle reflexes, special powers, purple T-shift… ability to speak Latin…
Jason scratched his head. “You named him Festus? You know that in Latin, ‘festus’ means ‘happy’? You want us to ride off to save the world on Happy the Dragon?
Wait. What?
Oh we’re in for a ride this time.
In a lot of ways, The Lost Hero is a continuation of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. We have many of the same characters, the same setting, and a timeline only shortly in the future.
But something… something very strange is going on.
Characterwise, Jason of course, but he’s also joined by a cast from the previous books (Annabeth and a bit of Rachel at least), along with a few new faces.
Leo, with a hidden past, shrouded in fire and a penchant for snark and building things.
Leo: Rainbows. Very macho.
Annabeth: Butch is our best equestrian, he gets along great with the pegasi.
Leo: Rainbows, ponies…
Butch: I’m gonna toss you off this chariot.
He’s so much fun.
And Piper. Daughter of a movie star and an unexpected (at least to me!) goddess, with a touch of kleptomania–or perhaps the ability to talk people into just giving her things.
They have a great dynamic and I’m looking forward to what chaos they can get into.
Oh, and of course we already beat the Titans. So now… we’re just going to need a bigger badder big bad. The mother of all big bads… as it were.
Onward!
Oh this book:
I’m the son of Jupiter, I’m a child of Rome, consul to demigods, praetor of the First Legion. I slew the Trojan sea monster, I toppled the black throne of Kronos, and destroyed Titan Krios with my own hand. And now I’m going to destroy you Porphyrion, and feed you to your own wolves.
