Man. I forgot how good this season is. Eleven with Rory and Amy. The Silence. It opens with the Doctor dying–and just gets so much crazier from there. It’s one of the best season-long plots (in my opinion) with a lot of solid episodes along the way.
A Christmas Carol - Skipping through time, with a cloudy sky full of flying fish. Delightful.
The Doctor: [Pointing to frozen Abigail Pettigrew] Who’s she?
Kazran Sardick: Nobody important.
The Doctor: Nobody important? Blimey, that’s amazing. You know that in nine hundred years of time and space and I’ve never met anybody who wasn’t important before.
The Impossible Astronaut - Bringing everyone together in the desert. To witness the doctor’s death.
River Song: This is cold. Even by your standards, this is cold.
The Doctor: Or “hello”, as people used to say.
Day of the Moon - The Silence. And (one of) the most famous days in history. Also the real introduction of Canton Delaware, who’s a fun addition to the series.
River Song: Apollo 11’s your secret weapon?
The Doctor: No, no, it’s not Apollo 11. That would be silly.
[pause]
The Doctor: It’s Neil Armstrong’s foot.
The Curse of the Black Spot - The one on the pirate ship! But with ghosts. Or aliens. Or alien ghosts.
The Doctor: [to the Pirates] Yo ho ho!
[pause]
The Doctor: or does nobody actually say that?
The Doctor’s Wife - A Time Lord distress signal and a trip outside the universe. And meeting a new (very old) friend.
The Doctor: You know, since we’re talking with mouths, not really an opportunity that comes along very often, I just want to say, you know, you have never been very reliable.
Idris: And you have?
The Doctor: You didn’t always take me where I wanted to go.
Idris: No, but I always took you where you needed to go.
The Doctor: You did!
The Rebel Flesh / The Almost People - One of those episodes that really digs into what it means to be people. And lays the ground for a few big parts coming up in the series.
The Doctor: Dicken, remember. People are good. In their bones, truly good.
A Good Man Goes to War - Oh, I do love this one.
River Song: [voiceover] Demons run when a good man goes to war. Night will fall and drown the sun when a good man goes to war. Friendship dies and true love lies. Night will fall and the dark will rise when a good man goes to war. Demons run but count the cost; the battle’s won but the child is lost.
Let’s Kill Hitler - For a time travel show, the fact that they haven’t done many stories with Hitler. I suppose it’s hard to do that right. But oh, this is a fun one. And, of course, another big reveal.
The Doctor: Rory, take Hitler and put him in that cupboard over there. Now. Do it.
Rory: Right. Putting Hitler in the cupboard. Cupboard. Hitler. Hitler. Cupboard. Come on.
Adolf Hitler: But I am the Führer!
Rory: Right. In you go.
Night Terrors - A one off with a creepy apartment complex full of mysteries. One of the weak ones this season, but still not bad. And it’s nice to have some standing alone.
The Doctor: Pantophobia.
Alex: What?
The Doctor: That’s what it’s called. Pantophobia. Not fear of pants though, if that’s what you’re thinking. Fear of everything… including pants I suppose. In that case, sorry go on.
The Girl Who Waited - One of those episodes with time flowing at different rates. But this time, perhaps a bit more directly. And the question: if you change the past, what happens to the future versions? Do they die?
Amy Pond: You didn’t save me.
Rory: [shudders] Bu- This is the saving! This is the us saving you! The Doctor just got the
Rory: [shouting aside, enraged] timing a bit out!
The Doctor: [mouthing] Sorry.
The God Complex - A hotel full of fear. Another creepy stand alone. This series has been doing darker, which I like.
The Doctor: Okay, this is bad. At the moment, I don’t know how bad, but certainly we’re three buses, a long walk and eight quid in a taxi from good.
Closing Time - The return of James Corden–this time with a baby in tow. I’m not a fan of strengthening the ‘dads can’t do anything right’ trope, even in the service of subverting it. But the Doctor’s “I speak baby” will never not be funny.
The Doctor: Yes, he likes that, Alfie. Though personally he prefers to be called Stormaggedon, Dark Lord of All.
Craig Owens: Sorry, what?
The Doctor: [indicating the baby] That’s what he calls himself.
Craig Owens: How d’you know that?
The Doctor: I speak baby.
Craig Owens: Of course you do.
The Wedding of River Song - A fixed point in time? NEVER! TIMEY WHIMEY!
The Doctor: If it’s time to go, remember what you’re leaving. Remember the best. My friends have always been the best of me.
Oh, I enjoyed this season.
