And that’s when things really went off the rails.
The last season (and especially the last episode) of Lost are somewhat controversial–and for a good reason.
There are some really fascinating ideas in this one, don’t get me wrong. Really fleshing out the mythology of the island (for better and for worse), dealing (ish) with the consequences of time travel and changing the timeline, and then finally trying to wrap up five seasons of throwing whatever crazy ideas they had even sort of neatly.
I’d think you might be able to guess what I think about how they did. 😄
Truth be told, I actually like it. Lost was huge in it’s day and is still worth the watch. They did a lot of neat things and we really did grow to care about the characters.
I think the last season could have leaned harder into alternate timelines and introduced it’s mythology quite a bit earlier–rather than only really getting into it with 4 episodes left.
Things I particularly enjoyed?
The opening and the twists in the flash-sideways storylines. It was all a bit too convenient, but I suppose that was the point in the end.
Locke. It’s an interesting choice, but I think it was well done.
Ab Aeterno - Richard’s backstory. I do wish there were a reason why Richard is the only one (at least that we see) with his particular gift though, but I liked him a lot in the latter parts of this show.
Across the Sea - A truly early part of the mythology of the island; this should have/could have been a story woven through the entire season. How could could that have been?
Things I didn’t?
Whidmore didn’t really end up making that much sense this season and didn’t go anywhere I’d hoped.
Sayid is totally different this season. I mean, there’s a good reason, but I still didn’t care for it at all. I miss the old Sayid.
The finale. It was an hour and a half of saying goodbye to the show and the characters, which is not something many shows get to do. But I’m not sure it felt earned or set up a clear ‘what could be next’ (even if there was never any plan for another show/season).
Overall, I love the first three seasons, 4 and 5 have some interesting ideas and new characters, and 6… It’s nice that at least we have a conclusion.
For what?
To remember. And to… let go.
She said we were leaving.
Not leaving. No. Moving on.
Where are we going?
Let’s go find out.
Onward to something different!
